The Complete Marvel Cinematic Universe Viewing Order (2026 Guide)

The Complete Marvel Cinematic Universe Viewing Order (2026 Guide)
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the longest, most successful film franchise ever made. It is also, by 2026, somewhat unwieldy: thirty-five-plus theatrical releases, fourteen Disney+ series, two Saga arcs, and a sprawl of one-off specials that make even devoted fans squint at Wikipedia trying to remember what comes after Wakanda Forever.
This guide does two things. First, it tells you the right order to watch everything if you're starting from scratch. Second โ more importantly โ it tells you what you can skip without losing the plot. Most "complete watch order" articles list every Marvel project as if they're equally essential. They aren't. Some are required viewing for the bigger story. Many aren't. I'll be specific.
Quick answer
Release order is correct. Chronological-by-setting is a trap. Watch the films in the order they came out, treat the Disney+ shows as optional unless you're a completionist, and skip the four films I name below if you want to keep the timeline tight. The "essential ten" for a newcomer who wants the full payoff of Avengers: Endgame: Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame. That's about 23 hours and covers the entire Infinity Saga arc that pays off in 2019.
The three viewing orders, briefly
Marvel debates are a recurring internet sport. Three approaches dominate.
Release order is what I recommend, and it's what Marvel itself recommends. You watch films in the order they hit theaters, from Iron Man (2008) to whatever's currently in theaters. This preserves every story beat exactly as it was designed to land, including the cameos, callbacks, and reveals that audiences experienced in real time. The first time you see Nick Fury after Iron Man's credits is supposed to be a surprise. Chronological order ruins that.
Chronological by setting sounds clever but breaks more than it fixes. People watch it this way thinking they're being efficient, then complain that Captain Marvel (set in 1995) "spoils" Captain America: The Winter Soldier (set in 2014 but released first). The chronological order also keeps starting and stopping different characters' stories in awkward ways โ you'd watch one Iron Man film, then jump to Thor's planet, then back to Earth for Hulk, then sideways to Steve Rogers in 1942. It doesn't track emotionally.
The "essentials only" order is for people who want the Endgame payoff without 30 films. I list this below as a 10-film path. The skipped films don't disappear from your future โ you can always go back and fill them in.
For the rest of this guide I'll walk through release order, marking which titles are essential, recommended, or skippable.
Phase 1: The Avengers Initiative (2008โ2012)
The era that proved a shared cinematic universe could work at all. Six films, all worth watching except one.
Iron Man (2008) โ Essential
The film that started everything. Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark is the reason any of this exists โ without his performance, Marvel probably gets one or two more films and then quietly winds down. Even today this holds up better than 90% of its sequels. Stream Iron Man โ
The Incredible Hulk (2008) โ Skippable
The first MCU film most fans pretend isn't part of the MCU. It stars Edward Norton as Bruce Banner (recast to Mark Ruffalo for every subsequent appearance), has almost no connection to anything that follows, and was largely written out of canon. Skip it. If you really need to fill the gap, watch the post-credits scene on YouTube. Stream The Incredible Hulk โ
Iron Man 2 (2010) โ Recommended
Worse than the first. Introduces Black Widow and War Machine. You can argue it's skippable, but a few Black Widow beats pay off later. Stream Iron Man 2 โ
Thor (2011) โ Recommended
Branagh's Shakespeare-adjacent take on Asgard. Loki's first appearance, which matters enormously down the line. Stream Thor โ
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) โ Essential
A WWII period piece with Chris Evans and the Tesseract. This sets up the Infinity Stones plotline and Steve Rogers as the moral center of the entire franchise. Stream Captain America โ
The Avengers (2012) โ Essential
The film that proved the whole project worked. Six heroes, one Loki, one alien invasion of New York. Joss Whedon's banter still hits, even fifteen years later. Stream The Avengers โ
Phase 2: The Universe Expands (2013โ2015)
Marvel got more confident and weirder. Mixed results.
Iron Man 3 (2013) โ Recommended
Shane Black's offbeat take on Tony Stark โ divisive but it ages well. The Mandarin twist is still one of the most argued-about choices in MCU history. Stream Iron Man 3 โ
Thor: The Dark World (2013) โ Skippable
Universally considered the worst MCU film. Almost nothing here matters for the rest of the saga. Skip it. Stream Thor: The Dark World โ
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) โ Essential
The first MCU film that's actually a great film on its own terms. A 70s-style political thriller about institutional rot, with Cap as the only honest man left. Probably the best Phase 2 entry. Stream The Winter Soldier โ
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) โ Essential
The film that proved Marvel could sell a talking raccoon. James Gunn's space-rock-soundtrack adventure brought a completely different tone and audience to the MCU. Sets up Thanos and the Power Stone. Stream Guardians of the Galaxy โ
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) โ Recommended
A mid Avengers sequel. Introduces Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver (briefly). Watch for the team dynamics; the plot is forgettable. Stream Age of Ultron โ
Ant-Man (2015) โ Recommended
Lighter, smaller-stakes heist film. Sets up the Quantum Realm, which becomes very important later. Stream Ant-Man โ
Phase 3: The Infinity Saga payoff (2016โ2019)
The best run of films in MCU history. Eleven films, building to a peak.
Captain America: Civil War (2016) โ Essential
Technically an Avengers film with Cap's name on it. The Avengers split over the Sokovia Accords, Spider-Man debuts, Black Panther debuts, Bucky is hunted. The airport battle is the best action sequence in MCU history. Stream Civil War โ
Doctor Strange (2016) โ Recommended
Origin film for Stephen Strange, who matters enormously in Infinity War and beyond. Visually inventive even when the plot is rote. Stream Doctor Strange โ
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) โ Recommended
Sets up Ego, Star-Lord's father, and emotional payoffs for Yondu. Less essential to the broader Saga than Vol. 1. Stream Guardians Vol. 2 โ
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) โ Recommended
Tom Holland's first solo Spidey film. Michael Keaton is excellent as Vulture. Stream Spider-Man: Homecoming โ
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) โ Essential
The film that fixed Thor. Taika Waititi reinvented the character as a comedy, and the new tone carried through every Thor appearance after. Cate Blanchett is genuinely terrifying as Hela. Stream Ragnarok โ
Black Panther (2018) โ Essential
A cultural event. Ryan Coogler's Wakanda is the most fully realized location in the MCU, Killmonger is the franchise's best villain, and the film's specific point of view matters for the trilogy that follows. Stream Black Panther โ
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) โ Essential
The Snap. Half of all life dies. Cliffhanger. This is the film the Infinity Saga had been building toward for ten years. Stream Infinity War โ
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) โ Recommended
A lighter palette cleanser between Infinity War and Endgame. Sets up the Quantum Realm's role in Endgame. Stream Ant-Man and the Wasp โ
Captain Marvel (2019) โ Recommended
Set in 1995, introduces Carol Danvers and explains where she was for the first 21 films. Brie Larson's performance is divisive but the film is fine. Stream Captain Marvel โ
Avengers: Endgame (2019) โ Essential
The peak. Three hours, time travel, the entire Infinity Saga paying off. If you watched everything else, this is what you watched it for. Stream Endgame โ
Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) โ Recommended
The epilogue to the Infinity Saga. Peter Parker grieving Tony Stark, plus Jake Gyllenhaal hamming it up as Mysterio. Stream Far From Home โ
Phase 4 and beyond: The Multiverse Saga (2021โpresent)
This is where most viewers fall off, and honestly, the falling off is justified. Phase 4 was a creative reset that nobody quite knew how to navigate, and the Multiverse Saga has yet to produce a film at the level of Civil War or Endgame. Some of these are good. Most are not essential.
Black Widow (2021) โ Skippable
A prequel about Natasha Romanoff set between Civil War and Infinity War. Watchable, but you already know how her story ends. Stream Black Widow โ
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) โ Recommended
A genuinely fun martial arts film. Simu Liu's introduction was one of Phase 4's bright spots. Stream Shang-Chi โ
Eternals (2021) โ Skippable
Chloรฉ Zhao's prestige attempt at a Marvel film. Visually stunning, but the ten-character cast was too much to introduce in one movie. Stream Eternals โ
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) โ Essential
The multiverse opens. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield return as their Spider-Men. The biggest box office success of Phase 4 and the only film of this era that has the energy of the Infinity Saga peak. Stream No Way Home โ
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) โ Recommended
Sam Raimi directing a horror-tinged Marvel film. Wanda's heel turn requires WandaVision context. Stream Multiverse of Madness โ
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) โ Skippable
The sequel that made everyone reconsider Ragnarok's legacy. Skip it. Stream Love and Thunder โ
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) โ Recommended
The franchise honoring Chadwick Boseman's passing while introducing Namor (Tenoch Huerta is excellent) and passing the Black Panther mantle. Stream Wakanda Forever โ
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) โ Skippable
Marvel's first attempt to introduce Kang as the next Thanos. It did not work. Stream Quantumania โ
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) โ Recommended
James Gunn's farewell to the Guardians. Heavier and more emotional than the previous two. Stream Guardians Vol. 3 โ
The Marvels (2023) โ Skippable
The lowest-grossing MCU film ever. Skippable. Stream The Marvels โ
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) โ Recommended
Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds. Self-aware, gleefully meta, and a course correction for a franchise that was starting to feel airless. Stream Deadpool & Wolverine โ
Captain America: Brave New World (2025) โ Recommended
Anthony Mackie's first solo outing as Captain America. Returns to political-thriller territory after Phase 4's tonal drift. Stream Brave New World โ
Thunderbolts (2025) โ Recommended
A Suicide Squadโstyle team-up of antiheroes. The closest a recent MCU film has come to the energy of the Infinity Saga era. Stream Thunderbolts โ
The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) โ Recommended
Marvel's first crack at the Fantastic Four after decades of mediocre attempts elsewhere. Stylized, retro-futurist, decent. Stream The Fantastic Four โ
The Disney+ shows: which ones actually matter
The MCU launched fourteen Disney+ series between 2021 and 2025, and Marvel pitched them as essential viewing. Honestly: most are not. Here's the breakdown.
Required for the films:
- WandaVision โ Wanda's arc going into Multiverse of Madness doesn't make sense without it
- Loki (both seasons) โ Sets up the Multiverse Saga's entire central concept (the Sacred Timeline, Kang variants). You can't really follow Phase 5 without it
- Hawkeye โ Introduces Kate Bishop and Yelena, who matter for Thunderbolts
Worth watching but skippable:
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier โ Sets up Anthony Mackie taking over as Cap, but the films cover the same ground
- Moon Knight โ Strong standalone with Oscar Isaac, minimal MCU connective tissue
- Ms. Marvel โ Kamala Khan introduction; she's also in The Marvels
- Agatha All Along โ Spinoff from WandaVision; entertaining, low-stakes
Genuinely skippable:
- She-Hulk, Secret Invasion, Echo, Ironheart โ fans defend some of these, but none are required for any film going forward
Daredevil: Born Again (2025) is an exception โ it's continuing the Netflix Daredevil universe and is one of the strongest Marvel TV efforts in years. Watch it for the show, not because Marvel says you need to.
The "essential ten" for someone starting from zero
If you've never seen an MCU film and just want the Endgame payoff with the minimum time investment, watch these in this order:
- Iron Man (2008)
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
- The Avengers (2012)
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
- Captain America: Civil War (2016)
- Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
- Black Panther (2018)
- Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
- Avengers: Endgame (2019)
That's about 23 hours of viewing. You'll miss minor character arcs (Doctor Strange's setup, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel's origin), but every essential plot beat lands. If you enjoy what you watched, the recommended films and key Disney+ shows are there for second helpings.
What's coming next
The Multiverse Saga is supposed to peak with Avengers: Doomsday (in production, planned theatrical release in late 2026) and a final Avengers film after that. Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly returning, this time as Doctor Doom. Whether the saga's connective tissue holds together when those films land is a real question โ Phase 5's serialized storytelling has been uneven, and the multiverse premise gives writers permission to undo almost any character beat.
If you're catching up before Doomsday hits theaters, the essential prerequisites are: the Spider-Man trilogy, Multiverse of Madness, Loki (both seasons), Quantumania (yes, unfortunately, for Kang context), and Deadpool & Wolverine. That's the connective tissue.
How long would it take to watch everything?
The full MCU through Fantastic Four: First Steps (mid-2025), including every film and every Disney+ series:
- Films only (35 features): ~75 hours
- Films + required shows: ~95 hours
- Films + all shows: ~140 hours
For comparison, all 11 seasons of Frasier is about 110 hours. The full MCU is now longer than Frasier. Think about that.
Frequently asked questions
What is the correct order to watch the MCU?
Release order, starting with Iron Man (2008). This preserves every reveal, callback, and cameo in the order they were designed to land.
Should I watch chronologically by setting instead?
No. Chronological order sounds clever but breaks story beats โ Captain Marvel (set in 1995) spoils elements of The Winter Soldier (set in 2014, released first), and the constant jumping between unrelated character stories doesn't track emotionally.
How many MCU films are there?
Thirty-five theatrical films released between 2008 and 2025, with Avengers: Doomsday planned for late 2026 as the thirty-sixth.
Do I need to watch the Disney+ shows to understand the films?
Mostly no. WandaVision and both seasons of Loki are the only series with direct, plot-level connections you'd miss otherwise. The rest are optional.
Which MCU films can I skip?
The Incredible Hulk, Thor: The Dark World, Black Widow, Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, Quantumania, and The Marvels are all skippable without losing plot continuity. None of them set up anything that isn't re-explained later.
What is the highest-rated MCU film?
The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Black Panther (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019) consistently rank at the top across critic and audience scores.
Where can I stream MCU films?
Almost every MCU film is on Disney+. A few have parallel licensing deals that occasionally surface them on other services. For real-time, country-specific availability on any title, search at wheretowatch.me.
Is the MCU still worth watching after Endgame?
Honestly, it depends. The Multiverse Saga has produced some good films (No Way Home, Deadpool & Wolverine, Thunderbolts) and several misfires. If you enjoyed the Infinity Saga, the highlights of the Multiverse Saga are still worth your time โ but you can absolutely stop after Endgame and lose nothing meaningful.
